RWE has signed a long-term power purchase agreement with Meta. The US technology group is thus continuing to rely on renewable energies for its data centers in Texas.
Energy company RWE and Meta have signed a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) for the 200 MW "Waterloo" solar project in Texas. The US technology company Meta intends to use all the electricity generated for its regional data centers.
Construction of the solar park in Bastrop County in central south-east Texas is set to begin at the end of this year, as the partners announced in a press release. Once operational, the facility will provide approximately 438 billion kWh of green electricity per year, contributing to Meta's carbon-neutral business strategy. The company is pursuing the goal of operating its global activities entirely with renewable energies.
Third cooperation between RWE and Meta
The contract is already the third electricity supply agreement between RWE and Meta within a few months. In total, both companies have concluded long-term purchase agreements for 574 MW from RWE projects in Texas, Illinois and Louisiana. In addition to the "Waterloo" project, this includes the 274 MW "County Run" solar project in Illinois and the 100 MW "Lafitte" solar project in Louisiana.
"Our partnership with Meta demonstrates the importance of meeting the growing demand for electricity in the US with renewable energy," said Christoph Hunfeld, Chief Commercial Officer of RWE Clean Energy. "The collaboration also allows us to invest in local communities, create jobs and economic development."
RWE is one of the largest providers of renewable energy in the US and commissioned 1,600 MW of new wind, solar and battery storage capacity last year. According to the company, it operates over 180 plants with a total capacity of around 11,000 MW and has a further 4,000 MW under construction.
