The German hydrogen initiative "AquaVentus" and the industry association Hydrogen Scotland have agreed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in Aberdeen.

On the fringes of the "Offshore Europe" trade fair, Aquaventus and Hydrogen Scotland signed a memorandum of understanding. The aim of the memorandum of understanding is to expand hydrogen production and transportation in the North Sea region and to make joint use of the existing infrastructure potential, according to a statement from Aquaventus.

Both partners want to drive forward the development and use of technologies along the entire value chain - from production, transport and storage through to the use of hydrogen for the decarbonization of the energy system. The focus is on linking wind power, offshore electrolysis and a European hydrogen backbone to accelerate the development of a supra-regional energy market.

With more than 200 members, Hydrogen Scotland represents industrial companies, cities and local authorities, universities and development agencies. The association promotes Scottish hydrogen and fuel cell technology and supports its members in the development and implementation of projects.

The Aquaventus initiative brings together around 100 companies, organizations and research institutes. It aims to produce one million tons of green hydrogen per year from offshore wind energy in the North Sea and transport it to land via pipelines. At the same time, the framework conditions for the installation of 10 gigawatts of generation capacity from offshore wind across Europe are to be created and the necessary transport infrastructure established.

Jörg Singer, CEO of Aquaventus, emphasized: "As Europe's largest industrial location, Germany is dependent on reliable quantities of green hydrogen. The cooperation with our partners in Scotland opens up enormous opportunities."

Nigel Holmes, CEO of Hydrogen Scotland, added: "Scotland is uniquely positioned due to its enormous offshore and onshore wind potential. Working closely with Aquaventus, we are building a bridge across the North Sea - not just between two countries, but for a true European hydrogen market."

Alongside the signing of the memorandum, Aquaventus presented a position paper. Entitled "German-British Hydrogen Partnership - A European impulse for energy sovereignty and industrial transformation", it is dedicated to the possibilities of deepening international cooperation, especially with the wind-rich United Kingdom. The paper is available for download.
