From pilot project to profit: innovation trends in the European energy sector

How Europe's leading energy companies are driving innovation

17.09.2025

Our cluster energy technology partner V_labs has published a report on the implementation of innovations in energy companies.

It summarizes insights from 87 companies across Europe - including utilities, grid operators and clean energy scale-ups. The report examines how the sector is moving from pilot projects to profitable projects, where implementation gaps remain and what sets the frontrunners apart.

The European energy sector is undergoing one of the most significant transformations in decades - driven by geopolitical changes, climate targets and rapid technological change. Innovation is no longer an option. It is a strategic necessity.

To understand how companies are adapting, V_labs launched the Energy Innovation Survey 2025, gathering insights from 87 professionals across the continent - including utilities, grid operators, oil and gas companies and cleantech scale-ups.

The results show a sector on the move. While almost all companies recognize the need for innovation, many are still in the early stages of implementation. Some are stuck in pilot mode, while others are already achieving their first commercial successes.

The focus is on the following topics:

  • What is driving innovation across the sector?
  • How companies structure their venture units
  • Where skills gaps and cultural barriers remain
  • What characterizes the most successful innovators who are already generating significant revenue from new ventures.

It also outlines six strategic recommendations to help companies turn their vision into reality - and unlock real value through innovation.

Whether you are a business innovator, a business founder or an energy manager: This report offers practical insights for tackling one of the most dynamic chapters in the industry's history.
