The Federal Cabinet has adopted the Federal Report on Energy Research 2025. The report shows progress, trends and success stories of sustainable energy technologies and illustrates how research supports the Federal Government's energy and climate policy goals.
In 2024, the federal government provided around 1.4 billion euros for energy research. Around 975 million euros of this went to 6,763 research, development and demonstration projects. A further 378 million euros went to institutional funding for the Helmholtz Association's energy research field.
With this report, the German government is underlining the strategic importance of energy research for security of supply, system efficiency, climate protection and the resilience of the energy system. At the same time, it strengthens industrial competitiveness and value creation in Germany through innovation.
The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) is responsible for energy research. The Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) is also involved, particularly in basic research and nuclear fusion. The report also highlights the role of the federal states, the EU and international cooperation in the field of energy research.
