Stadtwerke Stuttgart puts freely accessible fast-charging points directly on the street into operation for the first time. At the same time, the AC network in residential complexes and parking garages continues to grow.

Stadtwerke Stuttgart is expanding the charging infrastructure in the city area with new fast-charging points on public streets. In the districts of Zuffenhausen, Vaihingen, Sillenbuch, Weilimdorf and West, ten DC charging points are going into operation, which are accessible around the clock. At the same time, the company is installing additional AC charging points in residential parking garages and in a central inner-city garage.

With the commissioning of the fast-charging points, Stadtwerke is responding to the increasing demand for charging options available at short notice in urban areas. "With the completion of the first ten roadside fast-charging points, we are enabling fast charging around the clock. The five locations developed with the approval of the state capital fit perfectly into our strategic orientation of a comprehensive and demand-oriented charging network in Stuttgart," says Florian Hägele, Head of Charging Infrastructure and Electromobility at Stadtwerke Stuttgart.

Integration into existing infrastructure strategy

The new locations were developed in consultation with the state capital of Stuttgart and integrated into existing network expansion plans. The aim is to create a comprehensive and needs-based charging network that addresses both transit traffic and residents. The charging points achieve outputs of up to 170 kW and enable charging times of around 30 to 60 minutes up to a charge level of 80 percent.

The positioning of the fast charging points directly on the roadside is an extension of previous concepts, which primarily relied on charging infrastructure in parking garages or on private land. This shifts the focus more towards public spaces. The city is thus pursuing the goal of reducing barriers to the use of electric vehicles in densely built-up urban areas.

The expansion of the AC charging infrastructure is also progressing. Energiedienste der Landeshauptstadt Stuttgart (EDS), a wholly owned SWS subsidiary, is opening twelve new AC charging points in residential parking garages of the civil engineering department that are not accessible to the public. The charging infrastructure offer is aimed at local residents. In addition, the AC charging infrastructure that has been in place in the city center town hall garage since 2018 was replaced. This involves four new public AC charging points and twelve new AC charging points for the municipal vehicle fleet.

Contribution to long-term climate targets

The expansion of the charging infrastructure is taking place in the context of the municipal climate targets. Stuttgart is aiming for climate neutrality by 2035. Stadtwerke sees the charging infrastructure as a central building block for the electrification of the transport sector.

According to the Group, it currently operates 67 fast charging points and 1,732 AC charging points in the city. The new facilities will increase the density, particularly on public roads. Further expansion steps are planned in order to meet the increasing demand for charging capacity in urban areas.
