Increasing numbers of companies and private households in Germany are using the sun to generate electricity: More than 2.6 million PV systems are currently installed in Germany.
According to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), photovoltaic systems with a total rated output of around 70,600 MW were installed on roofs and properties in the Federal Republic in March 2023. This means that the number of systems, currently at 2.6 million, increased by 16 percent compared to the same month last year, while installed capacity rose by 21 percent. In March 2022, there had been just over 2.2 million PV systems with a rated capacity of nearly 58,500 MW.
All solar systems that feed into public utility grids and have an electricity meter were included. Smaller systems, such as so-called balcony power plants, are therefore generally not included.
The operation of PV systems fed a good 54.3 million MWh of electricity into the grid in this country in 2022 - an increase of 20 percent over the previous year. In 2021, grid feed-in from photovoltaic systems had been around 45.3 million MW.
PV's share of total electricity generation has also increased: In 2022, photovoltaics accounted for 11 percent of the electricity fed into the German grid - a new record. In 2021, photovoltaics had accounted for 9 percent of total electricity generation. The record month for solar power in Germany so far was June 2022: at just under 7.7 million MW, one-fifth (20 percent) of the electricity fed into the grid in that month was generated with the help of PV systems.
