In 2021, about 4.7 tons of CO2 per person will have been emitted worldwide, according to the Global Carbon Project. Compared to 1990, the amount of per capita carbon dioxide emissions has thus increased significantly. In a country comparison, China, which is home to just under one-fifth of the world's population, was the world's largest CO2 producer. Compared with 1990, emissions there increased more than fourfold, with China's high coal consumption also playing a major role.
