"Viana do Castelo" is set to become the world's largest floating offshore wind farm without subsidies. A German project developer has thrown its hat into the ring.

Baywa Re is entering the decisive phase of the official approval process for the world's first commercial floating offshore wind farm off the Portuguese coast. The project developer made the announcement on October 17. This follows discussions and consultations with the central government and local stakeholders.

The Munich-based company has applied for the rights to exclusive use of the seabed to develop a floating offshore wind farm with 30 wind turbines with a total capacity of up to 600 MW in a specially designated zone off the Portuguese coast of Viana do Castelo.

Baywa Re aims to support the development of a global supply chain for floating offshore in Portugal. The wind farm project is to be financed with a power purchase agreement (PPA) without public support. In particular, Portugal aims to increase the share of renewables in power generation to 80% by 2026.

The Bavarians have been successful in other floating offshore projects, but these are subsidized: For example, Baywa Re has been awarded the rights to develop the 960 MW Buchan offshore project off the northeast coast of Scotland. The company has also pre-qualified for two floating wind energy projects in France, including a 250 MW project in southern Brittany, as well as two projects in the Mediterranean with a total capacity of 500 MW.
