The Free State of Bavaria is driving forward climate-friendly aviation: the state is providing around one million euros to fund the development of charging infrastructure for electric aircraft at five locations. The airfields in Augsburg, Hof, Kempten, Landshut and Straubing have joined forces to form the "Electric Aircraft Route Network Bavaria".

Bavaria's Minister of Transport, Christian Bernreiter, presented the funding decisions in Augsburg. The aim of the project is to establish electrically powered flying in Bavaria and at the same time strengthen the future viability of regional airfields.

Charging infrastructure as a key technology

Among other things, funding is being provided for

  • Fast charging stations and wallboxes
  • Development of the electrical infrastructure
  • Photovoltaic systems
  • Battery storage

In total, the participating airports are investing around 1.4 million euros in the development of the network.

"Electric aircraft are climate-friendly and quiet. With the appropriate infrastructure, we want to give this technology a further boost," emphasized Minister Bernreiter.

Network for sustainable aviation

The electric flight route network is considered a pilot project for low-emission aviation. According to the state government, regional airports offer ideal conditions for testing new technologies and gradually integrating them into operations.

The network is not only intended to create infrastructure, but also to pool and pass on knowledge. The aim is to motivate other locations to follow suit and thus establish a growing network for electric aviation.

Positive prospects for electric aircraft

The first electrically powered aircraft have already been approved and are in use. Larger models are also expected to enter the market in the medium term.

The airports involved therefore see the project as an important step towards creating the conditions for this development at an early stage and making regional aviation more sustainable.

With the Bavarian electric flight route network, Bavaria is positioning itself as a pioneer for innovative and climate-friendly mobility solutions - and sending a clear signal for the future of decentralized aviation.
