Energy transition needs hydropowerAt the annual kick-off of the VBEW initiative "Hydropower - Yes please!" in Munich, around 70 participants from politics, associations and the energy industry emphasized the central role of hydropower in Bavaria.
In discussions with members of state parliament Kerstin Schreyer (CSU) and Martin Stümpfig (Greens), it became clear that hydropower is not only a clean, regional source of energy, but also makes a decisive contribution to environmental and flood protection.
Stability and sustainabilityWith a 15 percent share of usable electricity consumption, hydropower is the most important renewable energy source in Bavaria after photovoltaics. "Hydropower is efficient, sustainable and economical," says VBEW Managing Director Marian Rappl. In addition to CO2-neutral electricity generation, it also provides flood management: many hydropower plants have already been technically modernized and offer a high level of protection against extreme flooding.

Political backingKerstin Schreyer emphasized that hydropower contributes to regional value creation and that a stable energy mix without ideological intervention is necessary. Martin Stümpfig emphasized that hydropower should be given high priority in flood protection in view of increasing heavy rainfall events.
Hydropower thus remains a mainstay of the Bavarian energy transition - for a safe, sustainable future.
