Electric cars grew significantly in August: with 39,367 new registrations, their share rose to 19 percent, an increase of 45.7 percent compared to the same month last year.

According to figures from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), new passenger car registrations amounted to 207,229 vehicles in August. Compared to the same month last year, this represents an increase of 5 percent. Of these, 64.4 percent were commercial and 35.5 percent private owners.

The number of electric vehicles grew particularly strongly. With 39,367 new vehicles, this drive type achieved a market share of 19 percent and exceeded the previous year's figure by 45.7 percent, the KBA reported on September 3. Plug-in hybrids increased by 76.7 percent to 23,973 vehicles, which corresponds to a share of 11.6 percent.

Decline in petrol and diesel vehicles

Conventional drive systems, on the other hand, lost some of their importance. Petrol cars achieved 57,253 new registrations and thus a 27.6 percent market share, which corresponds to a decline of 18.2 percent. Diesel cars accounted for 27,219 new registrations and a 13.1 percent share, a fall of 9.2 percent. Cars powered by liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) accounted for 795 registrations (-16.6%), while only two fuel cell cars were newly registered. There were no new registrations for natural gas and hydrogen drive systems.

With a share of 34.4 percent, SUVs were the strongest segment. The compact class, small cars and off-road vehicles also achieved double-digit shares. The average CO2 emissions of new cars fell by 10.9 percent to 105 grams per kilometer in August.
