The other way to invest in the future

12.03.2026

The door opens. Five experienced investors sit in front of them, attentive, scrutinizing, tense. This moment is crucial for their entire future. The founders only have a few minutes to present their idea, their vision. They have the solution to a problem that has caused many to fail. The pitch goes well. The message gets across.
Now the entrepreneurs are waiting for the decisive factor: an offer. Perhaps the one million euros they want? Perhaps more, in return for a larger share in the company?
After a few seconds, one of the investors speaks up: "I'm investing!" He is delighted, but still cautious. How much will he give?
Then he continues: "I'm investing my time, my infrastructure and my expertise in the future. In return, I want you to give me a new perspective on an old problem, your inventive courage and a part of your high-tech solution."

The founders look at each other in surprise. Because they had expected money. Not with this kind of investment.
But this is precisely an important insight: investing in the future does not necessarily just mean cash flow.

Investing beyond the flow of money

The concept of investment is always associated with money in the first instance. Money flows and thus brings growth. But there is so much more that can be invested in the future. Other forms of investment are at least as valuable: time, experience, trust, knowledge or a strong network. Anyone who shares their expertise, opens up contacts or provides infrastructure is also investing in the future, just in a different way.

One of the most important investments in the future is precisely this partnership and therefore mutual trust. It is about having the courage to engage with each other, to learn from each other and to benefit from each other. Because when different perspectives come together, solutions often emerge that you would hardly have thought of on your own. Companies each bring their own strengths to the table: experience, technological expertise, new ideas or established structures.

Partnership as an investment

A concrete example of how partnership itself can become an investment in the future is the project "Cooperation between SMEs and start-ups", which is funded by the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs and implemented by Bayern Innovativ together with BayStartUP. It is not just money that is invested here, but above all knowledge, resources and mutual trust. Start-ups contribute fresh technologies, dynamism and new ways of thinking, while SMEs bring experience, market knowledge and established structures.

Targeted matching results in collaborations that benefit both sides and show that investing in the future does not always have to mean cash flow.
The project makes it clear that investing in partnerships requires a great deal of courage to engage with new partners, i.e. to place your trust in them. But it is precisely this step that drives innovation and paves the way for new technological developments. Partnership itself thus becomes the most important investment in the future. It is an investment in trust, exchange and joint development. And it pays off!

Why this is important right now

But why is all this so important right now? Why is this form of investment - not just in money, but in partnership, knowledge and collaboration - gaining in importance right now? A look at Bavaria as a location for innovation provides an answer. This is where many of the technologies that will shape our future are created: from new energy solutions to highly complex high-tech and deep-tech innovations. Strong regional networks are needed to ensure that these ideas are not only created, but also further developed and applied here. When start-ups with fresh technologies meet medium-sized companies with experience, infrastructure and market knowledge, this can create precisely the kind of dynamism that strengthens a location for innovation in the long term.

When companies and start-ups combine their strengths, innovations can not only emerge but also grow where they originate. In the absence of such partnerships, however, there is a risk that technologies and ideas will migrate to where they find better conditions for development. This is precisely what regional cooperation can prevent. People know the structures, are close to each other, speak the same language in a figurative sense and can develop ideas together more quickly. This creates added value, know-how and technological expertise directly on site.

Added to this is the increasing complexity of important future technologies. In the high-tech and deep-tech sector in particular, many developments can no longer be managed alone. This is clearly evident in innovation topics such as fusion energy. One example of this is the alliance around the Munich start-up Proxima Fusion, which is working on technologies for fusion energy. Together with RWE AG, the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics IPP and the Free State of Bavaria, the aim is to prepare the way from the scientific idea to a later energy application. Research, industrial experience, infrastructure and market access must work together here so that a future technology can actually become a functioning solution. In a complex world, innovations cannot be created without strong partnerships.

The future is created through partnership

So perhaps a pitch should sometimes end very differently from what you see on TV shows. Not with a large offer of money and an investment quota, but with a different promise: "I will invest my experience, my network and my infrastructure."

Because in a world in which technologies are becoming increasingly complex and innovation is rarely created alone, one thing is becoming increasingly important: the most important investments in the future are often not of a financial nature. They consist of trust, collaboration and the courage to enter into new partnerships.
Perhaps this is the most valuable investment of all.
