Neoen Germany is building its first large-scale battery storage facility in Saxony-Anhalt.

The subsidiary of the French company Neoen is building a battery storage facility with an output of 45 MW and a capacity of 90,000 kWh in Arneburg in Saxony-Anhalt. Commissioning is planned for 2026. Neoen intends to operate the facility itself in the long term, according to a press release. It will be built by storage system manufacturer Nidec.

The company intends to expand further in Germany by opening an office in Karlsruhe in 2023. An extensive project pipeline of over 1,000 MW in various stages of development "demonstrates Neoen's ambitious growth targets in Germany". Xavier Barbaro, CEO of Neoen, says: "The commissioning of the Arneburg battery storage facility represents a significant milestone, especially as we have only been operating in Germany for two years."

Capacity increased six-fold in seven years

The Paris-based company has been developing and operating large-scale batteries since 2017. With a storage portfolio of 2,300 MW and a storage volume of 5.3 million kWh, the company is represented on several continents. Its most important projects include the Western Downs Battery (270 MW) and the Collie Battery (560 MW) in Australia.

Neoen is also active in Europe with major projects. In Sweden, the company operates the Isbillen Power Reserve with a capacity of 93.9 MW. In Finland, the Yllikkälä Power Reserve 1 and 2 are the largest battery storage facilities in Scandinavia, with a combined capacity of 86.4 MW.

Over the past seven years, Neoen has increased its capacity six-fold and now has more than 8,900 MW of systems in operation or under construction. Neoen aims to increase this figure to 10,000 MW by 2025.
