The new EU directive to promote the repair of goods is now in force. The new rules promote sustainable consumption and facilitate the repair of defective products.
The directive will benefit consumers, avoid the cost of new purchases, and lead to less waste and greenhouse gas emissions. To help consumers find attractive repair solutions, a European repair platform will help consumers find suitable repairers. At the same time, the new directive also offers a new right to extend their legal warranty by one year if they choose to have their defective product repaired instead of having it replaced by the seller.
All EU member states now have until July 31, 2026 to transpose the directive into national law.
