The state of Brandenburg wants to get to the bottom of hot water in Lower Lusatia. Preparatory explorations start in July to underpin hopes for deep geothermal energy.
The search for hot water in the ground begins in Lower Lusatia. The Brandenburg Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labor, Energy and Climate Protection (MWAEK) wants to explore the potential of deep geothermal energy and has now set the process in motion.
Initially, preliminary explorations will begin in July, which the State Office for Mining, Geology and Raw Materials (LBGR) will be in charge of organizing and commissioning in accordance with the ministry's mandate. The state has earmarked three million euros as a grant for the seismic campaign.
The search will focus on the soil in the region between Cottbus and Guben on the border with Poland. There is also an area along the border and south of Guben. In total, the exploration tour will cover a distance of more than 100 kilometers.
The seismic company DMT Group, commissioned by the LBGR, is taking a look down into the depths. In July, a kind of scouting, i.e. preparatory explorations along the route, and the obtaining of permits to enter areas will take place first. Up to six weeks in the fall are planned for the 2D seismic surveys.
According to a statement, the ministry expects the investigations to provide a better planning basis for local authorities, industry and project developers. This should reduce investment risks for deep geothermal projects.
