New guidelines for regional hydrogen projects

NOW GmbH has published the guide "HyExperts - Successfully designing regional hydrogen projects" on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Transport.

According to NOW GmbH (National Organization for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology), the guide is intended to provide municipalities, companies and regions with practical assistance for planning and implementing hydrogen projects.

On behalf of the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport Affairs (BMDV), the federally owned company has published the new guide "HyExperts - Successful conceptualization of regional hydrogen projects". The document is based on findings from 28 "HyExpert" studies. It was developed as part of the "HyLand - Hydrogen Regions in Germany" program, which has been funded by the BMDV in the National Innovation Program Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology - NIP for short - since 2019. The document offers practical methods, checklists and best practices. It serves as a reference work for the analysis of regional potential, the development of concepts and the implementation of specific projects.

The contents include

• potential analysis: methods for assessing hydrogen production and supply
• Concept development: Planning of H2 infrastructures and use in transportation
• regulation: overview of approval procedures and legal framework conditions
• Funding: information on programs and consulting services

Background: "HyLand - Hydrogen Regions in Germany" is a competition initiated by the BMDV to promote regional hydrogen projects. Since 2019, stakeholders have been supported in three stages: from networking (HyStarter) to concept development (HyExperts) to concrete implementation (HyPerformer). So far, 53 regions have received funding.

"The concepts developed in the HyLand competition show the great potential of hydrogen for sustainable mobility and regional value creation," says Dagmar Fehler, Managing Director and spokesperson for NOW GmbH. "The guide provides local stakeholders with a practical tool for establishing a regional hydrogen economy."
