#bayernkreativPORTRAIT: Musician and sociologist Anton Schröpfer tells us today about his big project and the business model behind it, the challenges and his vision for "Teach.Meet.Beat". His project and creative business will find a home on the campus grounds in Niederviehbach from July 16, 2022.
Dear Anton, although you are a full-time sociologist at the Technical University of Munich, what role do music and culture play for you?
Music and culture are constants in my life. In music, I find a very peculiar reality in which I can try things out and lose myself completely without having a guilty conscience. It's also really strange: although I don't make any real money from music yet, music gives me the confidence that I don't have to worry about the future because it will lead me to something. And lo and behold: it leads me to bayernkreativ and I think it's really nice that I'm allowed to do a portrait for you here.
What projects have you realized so far and what added value do such projects have for society as a whole and for the cultural and creative industries in particular?
As a producer, singer and performer, I realize my own music projects. But I also find it very important to get involved in voluntary work. I am currently working intensively with a teacher, Denise Müller, from the Städt. Willi-Graf-Gymnasium in Munich. It all started with a project seminar on acoustics and physics, for which I provided support. This was followed by small workshops for music production, in which I helped pupils to set their own piece ("Act as One") to music. I also (co-)produced a single "Let the People Talk" (2019) and an EP "Sofia" (2020) free of charge for a former student of the high school, Sofia Lainovic, and supported the single "I will not bother anymore" (2021) in the area of vocal recording and mixing and guided the production.
I see the added value of such projects in the fact that young people get to grips with music production at a very early age - and without any marketing considerations. They give young people the chance to create something of their own and bring it into the world. This can show them that they can pave their own way and have the chance to make music according to their own values. They also learn to work in social groups, to open up and inspire each other in order to broaden their horizons of knowledge and experience. And who knows: maybe someone will even discover new passions in the field of audio, multimedia and sound engineering through such workshops, which could be career-defining in the future. I think Sofia Lainovic is currently a great example of how the cultural and creative industries can benefit from such projects. She now regularly performs in Munich and her songs have often been played in regional slots on popular radio stations (including Bayern 3).
Promoting talent is important to you in your work as a music producer. That's why you launched the Teach.Meet.Beat project. What can you tell us about it? What is special about it and what are the aims of this event format?
Teach.Meet.Beat. is the name of the creative business I founded. It will be officially launched on July 16, 2022. In addition to the commercial track in the field of music production, workshops and studio rental, the main focus of TMB is to realize projects according to the non-profit model. In formats that I call "sound workshops", for example, the aim is for as many different participants as possible to write and record a completely original piece of music together. Such approaches are not new in themselves. But what does not yet exist - at least in the Lower Bavaria region - is a place that was created specifically for this purpose. TMB was involved in the construction of a new campus building in Niederviehbach, which combines a recording studio, an ideation space and seminar rooms under one roof. In order to be able to give young people there experience through different musicians and experts from the regional music scene, I try to proactively raise cultural funding for the implementation of such projects. I am currently doing this with the Kultur entfaltet Talent e.V. cultural association, for example. I would like to start more projects like this.
What are your visions for the future of the Teach.Meet.Beat project and what added value do you see here for the cultural and creative industries in Lower Bavaria?
I hope that in the long term I will succeed in creating space and time for an artistic life and projects of this kind. At best, the Lower Bavarian cultural and creative industries will benefit from this in the form of good music, new up-and-coming talent and new bottom-up approaches for organizational collaboration or cross-sector networking and cooperation opportunities. Of course, all of this can only succeed with the help of new partnerships - and that's what I'm working on right now.
What was the biggest challenge for you at Teach.Meet.Beat?
The following 3 things: 1) The founding act itself, 2) getting involved as a sociologist for once as an entrepreneur, despite well-founded reservations about it and 3) creating interfaces between music, sociology, education and innovation that don't even exist yet.
The Bavarian cultural and creative industries are vital. Cooperative. Polyphonic. And relevant to the future. We introduce you to Bavarian players. What is their business model? What drives them?
