Glass 2.0 network officially launched

23.12.2025

Glass has been a defining component of Bavarian industry and culture for centuries. From everyday drinking glasses and bottles to precision optical products and artistic objects - the diversity of this material is impressive.

However, the glass industry is facing major challenges. High energy and labor costs are a considerable burden on companies. International competition is also putting pressure on domestic companies. In addition, the shortage of skilled workers in the glass sector is making it difficult to secure expertise that is in danger of disappearing forever. Other factors such as falling demand for products from traditional companies are also forcing companies to rethink.

This is where Bayern Innovativ comes in. The Glass 2.0 network aims to build bridges - not only between the players in the glass industry, but also to other industries in which companies from the glass sector increasingly want or need to establish themselves.
The network has already been working in the background for some time, but now the official go-ahead has been given at a launch event at the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy. Minister of Economic Affairs Hubert Aiwanger once again emphasized the importance of professional exchange across company and regional boundaries. This is also illustrated by the "2.0" in the network name, as the network originally emerged from a regional association in the Arberland region, but is now intended to bring together players from all over Bavaria.

We at Bayern Innovativ are delighted that the network will give us the opportunity to support the important glass industry, which is deeply rooted in Bavaria, and make it fit for the future.
To this end, various events are planned to address the needs and challenges of companies. Key aspects include topics such as emissions, raw material safety and knowledge retention. However, in order to not only react to challenges, but also to promote active action, the network aims to promote innovations for new applications and technologies made of and with glass. Not only large companies are involved, but also traditional glass craftsmen and artists.

In order to improve the exchange of ideas, Bayern Innovativ is setting up regular consultation hours in the start-up workshop in Zwiesel. Here, companies - with or without a connection to glass - can exchange information on innovations and support options from Bayern Innovativ. Minister of Economic Affairs Aiwanger gave the go-ahead for this by handing over a door sign for the start-up workshop where the consultation hour will take place.
