EnBW is starting to build one of the largest battery storage facilities in southern Germany at the Marbach power plant site.

EnBW is building a battery storage facility in BAden-Württember to stabilize the southern German electricity grid. With a capacity of 100 MWh, the facility can cover the electricity requirements of around 12,500 households for one day. Commissioning is planned for the end of 2026.

"Large-scale battery storage systems are indispensable for reconciling fluctuating wind and solar generation with actual electricity demand in the short term. Hydrogen-capable gas-fired power plants can take over for longer periods. Both technologies therefore complement each other perfectly," explains Peter Heydecker, Board Member for Sustainable Generation Infrastructure at EnBW.

The town of Marbach also welcomes the project. Mayor Jan Trost explains: "Marbach will be further strengthened as an important energy location by the construction of the battery storage facility. We are delighted to be making a contribution to the security of supply in the region. "

Battery storage systems play an important role in EnBW's generation business: They are used as standard in new solar park projects. EnBW is also planning another large battery storage facility in Philippsburg.

First of all, the ground is being prepared. During vibro-compaction, columns are inserted into the ground to increase the load-bearing capacity for the foundations. In the summer, 264 battery cabinets with around 110,000 battery cells consisting of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries without cobalt will be delivered. In addition, a medium-voltage switchgear system will be installed in a new building.

EnBW has already been operating a "grid stability plant" for the transmission system operator Transnet BW at the Marbach site since last year. The two gas turbines with an output of 300 MW are fired with light heating oil, but are not used for commercial electricity generation, but exclusively to ensure grid stability on behalf of Transnet BW.

EnBW currently operates 20 battery storage systems with an installed capacity of over 100 MWh. In addition, battery storage systems with a total of 1,800 MWh are currently being developed or have already been built. Every new solar park is equipped with battery storage systems in order to ensure that it serves the system.

Furthermore, EnBW recorded a record expansion of renewable energies of 800 MW in 2025. EnBW's generation portfolio thus contains more installed renewable energy capacity than any other energy company in Germany.
