The use of generative AI in small and medium-sized production companies in Germany
June 26, 2024
What exactly is Generative AI?
Generative artificial intelligence (AI) enables the creation of new content by analyzing existing data patterns. These advanced algorithms can generate text, images, videos and other media types and are particularly useful for automating and increasing efficiency in production companies.
Generative AI technologies include Generative Pretrained Transformer (GPT) models, which use large amounts of data to create new, plausible content.

Some application examples
Generative CAD models and FEM optimization: By using generative AI, CAD models can be optimized using the finite element method (FEM). This enables a reduction in material consumption while maximizing structural integrity, resulting in more cost-effective and sustainable designs.
Text and image generation: Companies use AI to automatically create marketing content or technical documentation. This content can be tailored specifically to customer requirements or market-specific conditions, which increases efficiency in communication and marketing.
Quality assurance through camera-based control: Companies use AI-supported image recognition systems in production lines to check products for defects in real time. This reduces the reject rate and significantly improves product quality.
Predictive maintenance: AI-supported predictive maintenance systems analyze machine data to predict maintenance requirements. This prevents unplanned downtime, increases machine availability and extends the service life of the machines.
This is what the Federal Statistical Office says
Frequency of use: Around 12% of German companies with at least ten employees use AI technologies. Large companies use AI more frequently than small and medium-sized companies.
Main areas of application: AI is predominantly used in accounting, controlling, financial administration (25%), IT security (24%) and production processes (22%).
Technological applications: Speech recognition (43%), automation of workflows (32%) and text mining (30%) are among the most common applications.
Outlook
The future of generative AI in small and medium-sized production companies is promising. New opportunities such as advanced materials research, individualized production methods and intelligent supply chains are opened up by the continuous development of this technology. To remain competitive, companies should take advantage of generative AI to increase their efficiency and optimize their processes. Training and education are essential to keep employees up to date with the latest technology. The most common reason for not using AI, and therefore forgoing any of its benefits, is a lack of knowledge.
