Success Story: b-plus and AVL

05/12/2022

Our long-standing cluster partners b-plus and AVL have initiated a joint cooperation project - which also pleases the Automotive cluster: After all, one of the cluster's goals is to network the cluster partners more closely with each other and thereby sound out possible cooperation projects. The current success story shows that this has succeeded at b-plus and AVL.

Today, there is no way around data-driven processes in the development and validation of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and automated vehicles (AD). The tools and methods used in these processes generate huge amounts of data. This "flood" of terabytes (TB) leads to major challenges for ADAS/AD customers. AVL and b-plus offer an integrated overall solution for this purpose, which can be used to efficiently capture, manage and further process the data volumes acquired during real drives.

AVL has developed a reference system with its Dynamic Ground Truth System™ (DGT), which enables 360° environment detection and is thus completely independent of the test vehicle's sensors. Lidar sensors, high-resolution cameras and GNSS system capture the environment around the test vehicle, generating a continuous data stream of 1 TB per hour. In parallel, the DGT system also records the test vehicle's sensor data, which means a similarly large volume of data.

For data processing, AVL's DGT system benefits from b-plus's integrated data logger BRICK 2

In order to successfully secure the immense data that is generated for an efficient and high-performance validation environment, b-plus has developed a solution with the integrated data logger BRICK 2 that records the input from the reference system and the vehicle sensors synchronously in time. During subsequent processing, the b-plus COPY-Lynx automatically transfers the data to a high-performance data center or to an appropriate data cloud, where the AVL ADAS/AD Analytics Platform (AAP) immediately handles the organization and analysis.

Collaboration benefits both partners

"Data-driven development is a key method for the development and validation of ADAS/AD systems. With the AVL Ground Truth data acquisition system, the powerful b-plus data logger and AVL's analysis platform, we can rely on a standardized and scalable environment to implement this method," says Steffen Metzner, Product Manager in the ADAS/AD Testing Solutions division at AVL.

"It is becoming increasingly important for our customers in the ADAS/AD environment to obtain high-quality data that they can use as a basis for their data-driven development. The combination of AVL's reference sensor system with b-plus' hardware and software toolbox is a comprehensive solution block. Our technologies complement each other perfectly to bring in large amounts of data and offload it to the data center," says Stefan Rankl, key account manager at b-plus.
