Knitted laser safety gloves

21.06.2024

The Saxon Textile Research Institute e. V. (STFI) has developed innovative knitted, active laser protection gloves. These gloves offer protection against laser radiation in the visible and near infrared range, which occurs in industrial and medical applications. The project was carried out as part of the Innovation Competence INNO-KOM funding program of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection (BMWK) and is the one thousandth project in the innovation catalog.

The aim was to develop user-friendly, single-layer gloves that offer protection thanks to special conductive and optically resistant yarn combinations. The gloves are designed to prevent skin damage from laser radiation and contain integrated sensors that automatically switch off the system in the event of damage.

During the project work, various knitting patterns and material combinations were tested and optimized. The protective properties of the gloves were verified by measuring the transmission, remission and absorption values as well as by calorimetric heat flux measurements and real irradiation tests.

These gloves represent an important advance in the field of occupational safety and help to increase the safety of workers in laser-intensive working environments.
