The European Commission has approved under EU state aid rules an Important Project of Common European Interest ("IPCEI") to support research and innovation and the first commercial use in the hydrogen technology value chain.
The project, entitled "IPCEI Hy2Tech," was jointly prepared by fifteen Member States and notified to the Commission for approval. The participating countries are Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia and Spain.
Member States will provide up to EUR 5.4 billion in public funding, which is expected to mobilize an additional EUR 8.8 billion in private investment. Under this IPCEI, 35 companies operating in one or more Member States, including small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and start-ups, will participate in 41 projects. The IPCEI will cover a large part of the hydrogen technology value chain:
- hydrogen production
- fuel cells
- storage, transport and distribution of hydrogen
- end-user applications, particularly in the mobility sector
It is expected to pave the way for major technological breakthroughs, for example, with a view to new high-efficiency materials for electrodes, more powerful fuel cells and innovative transport technologies, among others, enabling the use of hydrogen-based transport technologies for the first time. IPCEI is expected to create around 20,000 direct jobs.
