Funding for the digital transformation of the economy

The German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK) has launched a new funding program for the "Development of Digital Technologies" to further strengthen the digital competence and innovative power of the German economy in the field of application-oriented research and development. The funding program will run from 2022 to 2026.

The funding program addresses the three focus areas of technologies, applications and ecosystems. In the focus area Technologies, the following technology areas are in particular focus:

  • Methods of AI development of explainable AI models
  • New communication technologies such as 5G and 6G
  • Building blocks & components for IT security technologies
  • Data technologies for the creation of federated and high quality data spaces (Data Spaces) with technological support from GAIA-X
  • Quantum Computing Software and Utilization Concepts
  • Geoinformation Systems (GIS) and Environmental Data Technologies

In the focus area Applications, the following application fields shall be addressed in particular:

  • Digital Production (Industry 4.0)
  • Digital sustainability
  • Intelligent living and working environments
  • Intelligent systems for crisis prevention and management in terms of resilience enhancement

In addition, the funding program is also open to other technologies and applications of particular importance. Research projects are also intended to address the priority area of ecosystems by placing a focus on transferring technologies and applications into broad economic use, especially SMEs.
