The EU Commission wants to further reduce the power consumption of electrical appliances in standby mode.

According to the so-called Ecodesign Regulation of 2008, electrical appliances such as televisions or washing machines must meet certain efficiency standards in energy consumption in standby mode. These had been revised in 2013 for the last time. With new requirements, the Commission now wants to take into account the technological development that has occurred since then.

For the first time, low-voltage devices such as small network equipment, for example WLAN routers or wireless speakers, must also meet requirements of the Ecodesign Regulation. Manufacturers must also provide their customers with additional information, such as power consumption in standby, off mode, or networked power consumption, as well as the device's start-up time until it is ready for use.

Most of the new standards are scheduled to take effect in two years, with individual regulations taking four years. As a result, the commission expects electricity consumption in the EU to drop by 4,000 MWh per year by 2030 and 1.36 million fewer tons of CO2 to be produced. Consumers could save around 530 million euros a year in the process.
