The EU Commission awards free Interrail passes to young Europeans aged 18 to 20 as part of DiscoverEU. Now it has been decided who will be allowed to travel free of charge by train through Europe from June 2023.

Europe-wide, 145,657 participants in the DiscoverEU round in March have received the results of their applications: 35,324 young people were able to get a travel pass. From Germany, 20,368 young people had applied. Most applications came from Turkey (21,560) and Germany. Successful applicants will travel alone or in a group of up to five people between June 15, 2023, and September 30, 2024.

Good preparation and networking

The participants will travel by train, with some exceptions to allow those living on islands or in remote areas to participate. Under the EU's Erasmus+ education program and funded by the European Year of Youth 2022, this round of applications was open to young people born between July 1, 2004 and June 30, 2005, from both EU member states and countries associated with Erasmus+ (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Northern Macedonia, Serbia and Turkey).

Before the trip gets underway, Erasmus+ national agencies will prepare young people for their journey at information sessions. As a follow-up to the European Year of Youth, the national agencies offer DiscoverEU meet-ups, varied cultural programs lasting one to three days, in all Erasmus+ countries.

As social inclusion is a priority in Erasmus+, participants with a disability or health problems can be accompanied. Since October 2022, Erasmus+ national agencies have also offered grants to organizations working with disadvantaged young people through their DiscoverEU inclusion action.

Eurodesk Germany has produced an infosheet about DiscoverEU and about other travel grants for young people. The infosheets can be requested free of charge here. The youth information network Eurodesk answers all questions about DiscoverEU and also informs about alternatives.

Whoever wants to can become a DiscoverEU ambassador after the trip.
