The Digital Markets Act (DMA) establishes a set of clearly defined objective criteria for identifying "gatekeepers". Gatekeepers are large digital platforms that offer so-called central platform services, such as online search engines, app stores, messenger services.
The EU Commission has now assigned six companies this gatekeeper function on the Internet: Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, ByteDance, Meta and Microsoft.
They fall under the Digital Markets Act (DMA) as so-called gatekeepers, and this brings new obligations. The companies now have six months to comply with the full list of bids and bans.
The goal is greater choice as well as more freedom for end users and commercial users of these services. EU Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders affirmed that the Digital Markets Act will "help create a level playing field for all companies competing in the European digital market."
The gatekeepers maintain a total of 22 platforms such as Google and Youtube (Alphabet), TikTok (ByteDance) or Facebook and Instagram (Meta) and reach more than 45 million users each in the EU every month.
They must notify the EU Commission of any proposed merger. The DMA is one of the first regulatory tools to comprehensively regulate the gatekeeper power of the largest digital companies. The DMA complements, but does not change, EU competition rules, which remain in full force.
