Green hydrogen is not yet ready for the market. How prices compare to gray hydrogen is shown by the H2 price index from Enervis and E&M every two weeks.

The cost price for electricity market-based green hydrogen has continued to remain below 10 euros/kilogram for most of the past two weeks. The two-week high was 10.47 euros/kilogram, while the two-week low was 5.27 euros/kilogram. The weekly average price fell from 8.60 to 7.93 euros/kilogram.
The prime costs for gray hydrogen ranged between 3.69 and 3.98 euros/kilogram during the week. The price level was thus still consistently below the island solution of renewable energy plant and electrolyzer as well as the electricity market-based hydrogen.
Legend to the H2 price index
- Green hydrogen : production costs based on electricity prices on the spot market, guarantees of origin* for the respective amounts of electricity, and the investment and operating costs of an electrolysis plant - Green hydrogen (direct connection) : prime costs as a benchmark based on green reference electricity of a grid-connected renewable plant as well as the investment and operating costs of an electrolysis plant - Grey hydrogen : production costs based on natural gas prices on the spot market, prices for CO2 certificates, and the investment and operating costs of a natural gas steam reforming plant * According to Section 12i (2) of the Renewable Energies Ordinance (EEV), certificates of origin for renewable energies must currently be invalidated for the electricity purchased for the production of green hydrogen. In perspective, the requirements of the German government are to be adapted to those of the EU.
