The European Commission has published calls for proposals worth over €240 million under the Connecting Europe Facility for the deployment of ultra-fast, secure and sustainable digital infrastructures. These include 5G coverage along transport corridors (€100 million), 5G and Edge Cloud for smart communities (€51 million) and backbone connectivity for global digital gateways (€90 million).
5 G
The first two calls focus on improving 5G connectivity in all rural communities and urban areas to ensure that all EU citizens have access to digital technologies and services. The calls also support the development of 5G infrastructures along European transport corridors, in particular to support road safety services and provide gigabit connectivity services for vehicle users and passengers, while ensuring the integration of 5G/cloud peripherals.
Submarine cables
The Digital Global Gateways call will support the digital component of backbone connections, mainly through submarine cables, to improve the performance and resilience of connectivity networks in islands and coastal regions as well as in remote, ultra-peripheral and sparsely populated areas and between the EU and third countries. This is an essential element to increase the capacity and resilience of the Union's digital networks in line with the EU's Global Gateway Strategy.
The deadline for submitting applications for these calls is January 17, 2024. You can access the calls here .
