The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) has developed a climate-neutral circular concrete. With the launch of the pilot plant for Belit cement clinker, a key production step is now being tested in practice.
Concrete production is one of the main sources of industrial greenhouse gas emissions. With the new pilot plant, the researchers at KIT are testing an important building block for a future process for the production of climate-neutral circular concrete. The concrete from KIT becomes climate-neutral through the direct coupling of clinker production with the production of carbonated aggregate, i.e. the coarse-grained filler material in concrete. The additional use of process heat from clinker production also makes this process step in a pressure vessel particularly energy-efficient.
