The Fraunhofer IGCV conducts production engineering research with direct application relevance and bundles know-how in the fields of lightweight casting technologies, fiber composites and automated manufacturing.

The competencies range from materials science and structural mechanics to manufacturing technology and production. With the aim of sustainably reducing resource consumption in manufacturing companies and achieving a technological edge, the more than 100 scientists generate innovations for German industry. 

One main focus, for example, is on providing novel structures for lightweight construction that are differentiated by manufacturing concepts and joining techniques. The focus on hybrid construction methods and corresponding production systems also offers potential for highly integrated solutions and novel design concepts in lightweight construction. The integration of competencies from the field of Industry 4.0 is also an important building block for competitive production of tomorrow. Here, Fraunhofer IGCV is strongly committed to the transfer of digital technologies to companies, for example with the Learning Factory for Networked Production (LVP)
