Information

From natural sciences and engineering to law and economics to sports and African studies, a wide range of specialist skills and technologies are brought together and further developed here. The focus is on design, materials and processes, digitalization, business models and legal issues. As a result, interdisciplinary excellence is growing on the University of Bayreuth campus, which will provide groundbreaking impetus for innovation in research and development.

Companies from the region in particular are invited to experience the potential and applications of additive manufacturing in the laboratories and pilot plants on the Bayreuth campus. At the same time, CA.I is developing offers for school, vocational and scientific education and training in dialog with the regional chambers and the Campus Academy of the University of Bayreuth.

Summary

Thinking ahead with additive manufacturing.

Profile

Today, University of Bayreuth is one of the most successful young universities in Germany – ranked 38th out of the world's top 673 universities younger than 50 in the 'Times Higher Education (THE) Young University Ranking 2024'.

The University of Bayreuth is pleased with the consistently outstanding research results being produced, which repeatedly earn the University prestigious prizes and honours, such as European Research Council (ERC) Grants, Heisenberg Professorships or, especially for our early-career scholars, Emmy Noether Junior Research Groups. Thanks to our excellent research results, we obtain a considerable share of our budget from third-party funding, in addition to our state budget. These funds come from a variety of sources, both public and private, but first and foremost from the highly respected German Research Foundation (DFG), besides funding from the federal government, the European Union, and Elite Network Bavaria (ENB).

The Research Center for Additive Innovations - Campus Additive Innovations (CA.I) is a unique inter- and transdisciplinary think tank that brings together technical and non-technical skills and expertise from 25 chairs and professorships at the University of Bayreuth and non-university research institutions in the field of additive innovations. The Chair Manufacturing and Remanufacturing Technology (LUP) has set up a research and application center for additive manufacturing in Bayreuth. The LUP's projects focus on the industrialization of additive process chains for metal and polymer components that meet the challenges and needs of regional SMEs. The key topics of 'Intelligent value chains' and 'Efficient value creation systems' round off the LUP's profile with a focus on machine learning and artificial intelligence. The LUP is one of the few research institutions worldwide that has access to a completely open PBF-IR/P production machine (VX200 HSS). In-depth expertise in process and production technology aspects in the field of PBF-IR/P has been built up within the scope of projects, which represents a unique selling point in the research landscape. In terms of additively manufacturing metal matrix composites an innovative process has been developed by LUP researchers.
