Cluster meeting at Trollius Kalk & Dolomit - the gravel plant in Lauterhofen

According to the Bavarian Climate Protection Act, Bavaria should be climate-neutral by 2040.

But how can energy-intensive SMEs achieve climate neutrality? The economy and industry will only achieve climate neutrality if the basic materials industry also becomes sustainable. Lime and dolomite are among the most important raw materials for our daily needs. Our world as it is now would be inconceivable without this precious rock.

Hermann Trollius GmbH is an owner-managed, medium-sized company based in Lauterhofen. The company has been in existence for eight decades and processes lime and dolomite into high-quality products for the steel, glass, sugar and animal feed industries as well as for all kinds of applications in modern agriculture, forestry and the chemical industry. High-quality gravel and chippings are supplied for the construction industry and road building.

Environmental awareness and the careful use of available resources have always been firmly anchored in the company. Almost 100% of the quarried raw stone is processed into high-quality products for the various market segments using sophisticated processing technology. All washing water is recycled. All fine materials produced during production are separated out using modern filter systems and also refined into high-quality products.

True to the philosophy of sustainable raw material extraction in harmony with nature, the company wants to maintain and preserve an environment worth living in for future generations.

The company also wants to remain true to this philosophy in the area of energy supply in the future and focus on sustainable supply here too.

It is also worth taking a close look at the energy-intensive processes used to date. Electrification makes it easier to convert (fossil) gas-fired processes to renewable energies. However, the use of renewable generation plants brings new challenges for energy management.

Find out on site from our event partner how Hermann Trollius GmbH is tackling this challenge with process innovations. With around 8.5 gigawatts of electricity and 85 gigawatts of thermal energy, the company belongs to the energy-intensive sector.

The company already operates PV roof systems and a PV ground-mounted park. The construction of a wind power plant and an electricity storage facility is planned for the near future. The company is in the midst of a transformation.

Further information

Transformation of an industrial site into an energy cell with a high proportion of self-generation from PV and wind turbines.

The implementation of the energy cell concept at an industrial site is the first large-scale demonstration of how the conversion of a decentralized, renewable energy supply works economically.

In the Trollius energy cell, new planning methods and operating concepts for the optimal integration and operation of different renewable generation systems (wind, PV, storage with consumers) are being implemented.

The focus is on holistic planning, taking into account the gradual transformation of existing structures in a networked energy system.

Thermal storage: Solution for electrification and waste heat utilization at high temperature
Christian Kissling
Head of Business Development / Director Sales, Sales, Kraftblock GmbH, Sulzbach
Further information

Thermal storage systems are used to increase the flexibility of energy sources for heat applications, particularly in energy-intensive industries. Electricity or waste heat is used to replace fossil fuels in whole or in part. The energy in the storage tank can be stored between hours and days, for example to transport cheap electricity from the night into the day or to use surplus solar power as heat at night or the next day. Kraftblock has solutions from 100 °C to 1,300 °C and works with all standard heat transfer media. The storage tanks use a specially invented storage material made from recycled raw materials such as steel slag and are easily scalable. The modular design can also be adapted to the space available on site.
