EU Standardization Strategy 2022

08/09/2022

The EU's new standardization strategy aims to strengthen the EU's global competitiveness, enable the shift towards a resilient green and digital economy, and embed democratic values in technology applications.
Standards are an inconspicuous but important foundation of the EU single market and global competitiveness. They help manufacturers ensure interoperability of products and services, reduce costs, improve safety and foster innovation.

Standards are largely invisible, but play an instrumental role in many areas of our daily lives - whether it's Wi-Fi frequencies, toys or ski bindings, to name just a few examples. Standards are an expression of the trust placed in the fact that a good or service is fit for purpose, safe and will not harm people or the environment.

Compliance with harmonized standards guarantees that the products in question are compliant with EU law. The 2022 strategy presented proposes five key sets of actions:

  • Anticipate, prioritize and manage standardization needs in strategic areas
  • Improve the governance and integrity of the European standardization system
  • Strengthen Europe's leadership in global standards
  • Foster innovation
  • Facilitate generational change of experts
