Survey: Charging infrastructure from the user's perspective

Last year, the share of e-cars in registrations rose to just under 30 percent (half BEV* and half PHEV*). A further increase is expected, especially if many new e-models come onto the market in 2021. It is now important that solution providers, municipalities and network operators take into account the charging behavior of users for the necessary expansion of the charging infrastructure. In a user survey, the Competence Center Electromobility in cooperation with the opinion research institute UScale GmbH has obtained an opinion on charging behavior and public and private charging infrastructure and identified important potential for improvement.

Charging infrastructure from the user's perspective
Für einen erfolgreichen Ausbau der Ladeinfrastruktur muss das Ladeverhalten der Nutzer stärker in den Fokus rücken.
  • Compared to previous surveys from 2019, the overall satisfaction with the infrastructure is still too low and shows that there is still room for improvement.
  • The expansion of public charging infrastructure will become even more important in the future, because about half of the charging current is charged publicly. What is interesting here is that not all public charging points have to be fast chargers: E-car drivers want about 1/3 fast chargers and 2/3 normal chargers in the public space.
  • There is no significant preference in the locations of charging points recognizable; charging points should rather be available everywhere where parking is also.
  • About 60% of e-car drivers who have a charging option at home own a wallbox, a third of them a PV system. Around 30% of home chargers are dissatisfied and would opt today for a mostly higher-quality charging solution.
