The Fraunhofer Institute IGCV in Augsburg has opened a new research and development platform for batteries that gives small and medium-sized companies access to state-of-the-art battery technology.

From lithium and sodium-ion to solid-state batteries, new cell concepts can be tested on a 1:1 scale, examined and accompanied through to series production.

The platform comprises four modules: Electrode production, rapid prototyping, module and storage construction as well as performance and safety testing. "The platform accelerates the development of marketable batteries and strengthens Europe's technological sovereignty," explains Prof. RĂ¼diger Daub, Institute Director at Fraunhofer IGCV.

State Secretary Tobias Gotthardt and Mayor Eva Weber emphasize the importance for innovation, investment and regional jobs. The platform is intended to make it easier for SMEs to make the leap into battery cell production and strengthen Germany's and Europe's competitiveness in the energy storage sector.
