As an exporting company, the technical requirements of the destination country must be met before a product can enter the market outside the Union. Often, the exporting company must provide proof of compliance in the form of a certificate or test report. In addition, the country of destination usually requires certification and testing by conformity assessment bodies and laboratories in its own territory. This takes additional time and increases costs for exporters.
The European Commission is keen to improve export opportunities for EU economic operators, especially SMEs. To this end, it has launched a survey to identify the specific challenges faced by EU manufacturing industries in relation to conformity assessment procedures in markets outside the Union. The European Commission wants to make EU industry aware of the opportunities offered by existing Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRAs) concluded by the European Union. Such MRAs can save EU operators time and money by relying on the Union's CABs.
The results of the survey will potentially help update or expand the EU's existing MRAs, and will inform work on avoiding new and unnecessary technical barriers to trade under the EU-US Trade and Technology Council's Working Group 10 on Global Trade Challenges.
The survey will be available online until April 3, 2022, and the Commission will publish a summary of the results after the analysis.
