Smart Living - For a self-determined and healthy life

Whether smart household appliances, voice assistants or fitness trackers, smart systems are becoming increasingly popular in our daily lives. Current social challenges, global megatrends and technological innovations are motivating many companies to develop sustainable solutions for the private household.

Smart healthcare on the rise

Networkable household components, sensor-based applications and mobile communication devices are also advancing rapidly in the healthcare sector , offering end users, healthcare facilities and companies a wide range of possible applications. Solutions for improved quality of life are also being developed in the Smart Home application scenario "Health" from a broader perspective of health economics, ecology and social need. Apps and wearables that enable mobile measurement of vital signs, for example, are already among everyday companions. The market for sensor-based health applications is increasingly expanding from the sports and wellness sector into the area of medical care. Thus, smart home technologies not only offer many advantages for young and healthy people, but can be a great help especially for elderly people and those in need of care.

Multiple applications: From Wearable Sensors to Artificial Intelligence

"Intelligent wearable sensors and embedded AI are important prerequisites for patient-centric quantified health solutions that improve our quality of life," emphasizes Dr. Christian Münzenmayer of Fraunhofer IIS, who will moderate the session on "Smart Living - Sensor and Data Driven Health" at the international medical technology congress MedtecSUMMIT on April 22, 2021. Little helpers that are wirelessly connected to a smartphone or tablet can be important supporters for those in need of care in their home environment. For example, intelligent systems remind people to drink, talking medication dispensers assist with regular medication intake, and special sensors detect a person's falls or the need to reposition someone who is bedridden.

Smart systems enable people in need of care to live independently in many areas of daily life, relieve the burden on family and caregivers, and prevent emergencies.

Challenges in the smart living market

Acceptance of smart home products is growing, and companies are increasingly recognizing the high growth potential in the smart home market. Nevertheless, this is also accompanied by a number of challenges. Lack of trust in data protection and IT security still inhibit the spread of smart home technology. Therefore, there is a high need for education and information, especially with regard to the topics of data security, quality management, acquisition and installation.

Smart Home under the watchful eye of the GDPR

With the rapid development of the Internet of Things - Industrial Internet of Things (IoT) - stricter guidelines for the protection of personal data have been required. The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), introduced in May 2018, also applies to all devices that collect data and send it to manufacturers or service providers. The more smart home devices are used, the more providers and prospective buyers must focus on ensuring data privacy and security. If this goal is reliably achieved at a high level, smart buildings can develop their full potential.

Current Trends "Smart Living" at MedtecSUMMIT 2021

At the international medical technology congress MedtecSUMMIT , which will be held virtually in conjunction with the MedtecLIVE trade fair from April 20 - 22, 2021, renowned experts will address precisely these topics in the session "Smart Living - Sensor and Data Driven Health" on February 22, 2021. The morning session will present the latest technological innovations and best practice applications. The session will be led by Christian Münzenmayer, a player in the Cluster Medical Technology as well as a member of the expert panel for funded projects at Projektträger Bayern , moderated.

Dr. Ulrich Ashok Sridhar provides insight into current research at the TNO Holst Centre, based in the Netherlands, for future generations of wearable sensor technologies. Ulrich Jens Kraus of the Swiss company CSEM presents oBPM (optical Blood Pressure Monitoring), an innovation in blood pressure measurement. Schulze Althoff from Medisana GmbH will use application examples to show how smart health technologies and applications can be put to good use for self-quantification and remote diagnosis. Ester Sarquella from the Spanish Tunstall Healthcare Group will conclude the session with a look into the future of networked care and health.

Thanks to the Digital Care Act, digitization in medicine is finally picking up speed. We are supporting this with a Federated Telemedicine Platform that will facilitate future DiGA developments.

Christian Weigand Leiter des Mobile Health Lab vom Fraunhofer IIS und CTO im Digital Health Application Center

In the afternoon, experts interactively address the opportunities and challenges of smart healthcare. Christian Weigand, head of the Mobile Health Lab at Fraunhofer IIS, will present the latest developments of a generic telemedicine IT platform. Individual patient data can be automatically collected and exchanged between users and the relevant healthcare providers.

Jan Küfner from TÜV SÜD then explains how information security tests, firmware monitoring and customer-specific tests are carried out, taking into account current standards and changes in legislation.
A LIVE HACK by Sourabh Naik of TÜV SÜD will round out the program.

Moderation will be provided by Jochen Bauer, head of the Home Automation research area at the FAPS Chair at Friedrich Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU).
