A very important competence of MANN+HUMMEL Molecular lies in the processing of activated carbon into easy-to-handle filter media, in order to specifically tailor certain performance properties to the needs of our customers. This can mean the absorption of odors, moisture (shoe and seat comfort systems) or the targeted separation of substances foreign to the air (chemical gas filters for microelectronic manufacturing processes).
The special properties of activated carbon lie in its enormous internal surface area and the fine network of external and internal pores and channels to which substances can attach. For example, a teaspoonful of activated carbon has the internal surface area - responsible for absorbing pollutants and moisture - of a soccer field. As with a sponge, a wide variety of gases can thus be absorbed.
