The institute sees itself as a competence provider for industrial applications of bioplastics/biopolymers with the aim of product development and resource conservation. It forms the bridge between international research and development in this field and actual product development in companies. The focus of the research and development work is on independence from petroleum-based products, reducing plastic waste and preventing the formation of microplastics. This results in 4 main research areas:

• Manufacturing of bioplastics/biopolymers
• Processing of bioplastics/biopolymers
• Recycling of plastics and bioplastics
• Sustainability in product development
