Healthcare Hackathon 2024 - a look back
"Hack until the doctor comes" - this was the motto under which creative and ingenious minds tackled the challenges facing the healthcare industry from Thursday to Saturday. A total of 200 hackers from all over Germany came together in Munich and Erlangen and contributed their ideas from a wide variety of fields. From IT and care to medicine, interested parties and experts came together in Erlangen and Munich to develop innovative solutions. The teams with the best solutions presented their ideas in pitches and were awarded prizes by a jury, with the winning teams also receiving prize money.
The aim of the three-day Healthcare Hackathon Bavaria was to rethink challenges in the healthcare sector and find innovative solutions. The event was held under the patronage of Judith Gerlach, the Bavarian Minister of State for Health, Prevention and Care. The EDIH-DigiCare project aims to promote digital innovations in the healthcare sector. To achieve this goal, hackers from all over Germany came to Erlangen and Munich to take part in ten different challenges to make the healthcare system more digital and sustainable.
"The Healthcare Hackathon Bavaria brought together experts, doers and visionaries, and the result is exactly what we need: new, innovative ideas that have a direct and immediate benefit for service providers and patients and thus contribute to the quality of care," says Dr. Jörg Traub, Head of Healthcare at Bayern Innovativ GmbH.
Ten challenges and even more solutions
The challenges covered various topics from the healthcare sector. In addition to the telematics infrastructure and feedback systems for the emergency services, the focus was also on prevention, patient training and the use of artificial intelligence. All challenges were in high demand, with the topics "Electronic patient file (ePA) for all", "Patient education", "Women's health" and "AI in healthcare" being particularly popular.
The best idea wins
Prizes were awarded for the best idea in both Erlangen and Munich. The jury of the Healthcare Hackathon Bavaria had the difficult task of selecting the strongest from the numerous innovative solutions. In Erlangen, they opted for the M-PATH team with a solution on the topic of menopause. The team developed a diary app that supports women going through the menopause with personalized feedback. The mentors from Bionorica would like to support the winning team from Erlangen together with the Munich hackers in the further development of their results.
Second place went to the Mammutgraph team with a solution to reduce anxiety about breast cancer biopsies. By using emotion analysis and data collection before the procedure, the solution provides doctors with personalized information that contributes to a smooth procedure.
Third place went to Team Flora, which aims to bridge a gap in care with a digital feel-good companion in the form of an avatar.
The jury in Munich also had a difficult time choosing. In the end, Team ALETEA won with an app solution that uses gamification to distract people from addictions in order to promote prevention and behavioral change.
Second place in Munich went to the "flexPointment" team, which enables flexible and fast appointment allocation for patients in an app. This solution reduces organizational overload after a diagnosis and facilitates access to specialist treatments. The app scans the referral slip and then displays the nearest and most promptly available appointments.
The third-placed team, "ExplainEPA", aims to give patients a better understanding of the contents of their electronic patient record (EPR). The solution should provide a simple overview, enable targeted queries and integrate health documents in a multilingual and user-friendly way.
The other six teams, supported by gematik, the Medical Service, Bionorica and the Bavarian State Ministry of Health, Care and Prevention, also developed impressive solutions. Due to the high quality, the jury's assessments were very close. It is to be hoped that each team will be able to take away valuable results for the future, pursue approaches further and improve healthcare as a result.
"We would like to congratulate all the teams on their innovative ideas and approaches that have been implemented. Especially the winning teams. I am delighted and grateful that the high level of personal commitment has resulted in solutions that can have a direct impact on the healthcare system and the quality of care. The mentors and challenge providers were convinced that the solutions will be continued after the kick-start at the two hacker days. And the hacker spirit will also continue, as the next Healthcare Hackathon is already in the starting blocks," concludes Traub.
After the hackathon is before the hackathon
The Bavarian State Ministry for Health, Prevention and Care and the patron of the Healthcare Hackathon Bavaria, Bavarian State Minister for Health, Care and Prevention Judith Gerlach, have contributed two challenges on the topic of "ePA for all". One challenge focused on making the content of the patient file easier to understand for patients, while the other was aimed at using the content of the ePA for preventive purposes. The next Healthcare Hackathon will take place in Berlin from November 4 to 5, 2024 at the invitation of PwC and Microsoft, where the findings from the two ePA challenges will be further developed.
The next Healthcare Hackathon Bavaria will follow on March 27 and 28, 2025 in Würzburg, accompanied by a roadshow through the Free State of Bavaria. In addition to Würzburg, Erlangen, Munich, Augsburg and Regensburg will also offer innovative challenges that require creative solutions.
