A chart says more than a thousand words: a current graph highlights the gross electricity generation in Germany by energy source in the years 2000 to 2021.

In 2021, 238 billion kWh of the total gross electricity in Germany was generated from renewable energy sources. This corresponds to about 41% of the total amount of electricity. In the past almost 20 years, the share of electricity generated from renewables increased significantly. At the same time, hard coal and nuclear energy recorded a significant decline.
