Sustainable Plastics 4 MedTech (SuPlaMed) - A project for more sustainable medical technology

The cross-cluster project Sustainable Plastics 4 MedTech (SuPlaMed) is a cooperation between the Industrial Biotechnology Cluster (CIB) and the Medical Technology Cluster (CMT). The aim of the project is to tap into the potential of bioplastics for more independent and sustainable medical technology and make it better known.

Background and challenges
The medical technology industry is heavily dependent on international supply chains and fossil raw materials, which leads to considerable environmental problems. The use of plastics in medical technology results in large amounts of plastic waste that often has to be incinerated, which in turn leads to air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, persistent chemicals such as PFAS pose a serious threat to the environment.

Project goals and approach
The SuPlaMed project aims to reduce dependence on fossil raw materials and at the same time minimize environmental impact through the use of bioplastics and other sustainable materials. To this end, a comprehensive analysis of the existing challenges and potentials is being carried out. A central component is a workshop in which stakeholders from industry, research and politics come together to jointly develop solutions and identify new business models.

Target group and stakeholders
The project is aimed at medical technology companies, the healthcare sector, governments, supervisory authorities, science and research. Close collaboration between these stakeholders is crucial in order to develop and implement sustainable solutions.
