Innovation map: Recycling in building construction

19.03.2025

The reuse of building materials is not a new topic. Examples of this are known from all historical epochs. Even today, some mineral construction and demolition waste is processed into recycled building materials and reused, particularly in civil engineering. In building construction, on the other hand, they have so far been used only to a limited extent. One of the reasons for this is a lack of information and experience.

The "RiBa" project aims to make a positive contribution here. Together with project partners from Upper Bavaria, Salzburg, Upper Austria, Vorarlberg and Swabia, we are looking for and presenting innovative construction projects that can serve as role models and inspiration.

Example of residential construction: the St. Vinzenz site in Wangen

In 2024, the Vinzenz Quarter with a total of 122 residential units in six buildings was built on the site of a former nursing school in Wangen. The project is a showcase project for sustainable construction, in particular through the processing of 15,000 tons of recycled concrete rubble and the use of clinker-reduced cement types to reduce CO₂ emissions. The balcony slabs are manufactured with carbon reinforcement, which offers greater strength and enables a more delicate design.

Example administration building: New building in Tirschenreuth

The Association for Rural Development (VLE) Upper Palatinate has realized a pioneering project with the construction of its new administration building in Tirschenreuth. Designed by Brückner & Brückner Architekten, the building combines cold bricks and filled masonry bricks with solid wood-clay ceilings from Leipfinger-Bader. The compact cube with atrium offers 15 office workstations and dispenses with active cooling, which minimizes energy requirements.

Example industrial building: Alberzell production hall

The construction company Irrenhauser & Seitz has built an innovative production hall in Alberzell that focuses on recyclability. The aim was to use as many locally available materials and natural resources as possible in the sense of the circular economy, which can later be returned to the material cycle. For example, the clay walls can be reused as soil, the broken concrete can be used in road construction or as recycled concrete and the wooden components can be reused.

Despite the sustainable approach, the building is no more expensive than a conventionally built one, as the savings in the disposal of materials have reduced costs considerably.
