The development of fast-charging infrastructure is being further accelerated in Bavaria. Almost every fourth publicly accessible charging point in Bavaria is now a fast-charging point with the corresponding CCS plug standard.
The figures in detail (***cf. assumptions)
CHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE:
1) Charging locations:
In Q2, modernizations or new installations were carried out at a total of 556 charging locations with 1,819 charging points in Bavaria. In total, there are now almost 24,000 publicly accessible charging points available to electric mobility enthusiasts, whose current occupancy status and much more information can be viewed via the Bavarian Charging Atlas (Ladeatlas Bayern). Almost one in four of these newly built or modernized charging points is a pure fast charging location (DC). The proportion of newly built charging hubs with AC & DC charging points was 8.5 percent in the second quarter.
2) Charging processes:
The absolute number of charging processes carried out at publicly accessible charging points in Bavaria remained at a constant level of just over 1.8 million processes in the last three quarters. However, it can be observed from these recorded charging processes that the proportion of DC charging processes is continuously increasing. In Q2, for example, DC charging processes already accounted for over 22% (almost 78% corresponding to AC charging processes). The average number of charging processes per charging point was 92 in this quarter, a decrease on the previous quarters.
3) TOP 5 charging locations in Bavaria
The EnBW Charging Hub with 24 AC and DC charging points in the shopping area in Unterhaching once again secured first place among the most frequently used charging locations in Bavaria with just under 10,000 charging processes. The Fastned charging park east of Aschaffenburg, which is equipped with 8 fast-charging points and has excellent connections to the A3 and B26, also took second place with over 6,300 charging sessions. Third place was secured by another EnBW charging hub in the industrial park in Heßdorf, which is also equipped with 24 AC and DC charging points. Only one charging process less was completed at the Ionnity fast-charging location on the A9 in Himmelkron, which was recently expanded to a total of 12 charging points, thus achieving 4th place. The Ionity fast-charging station on the A7 in Illertissen took fifth place this quarter with just under 5,800 charging processes, although in terms of the absolute number of charging processes per charging point, it is the most highly frequented charging station in Bavaria.
Electric vehicles:
The proportion of new registrations (BEV + PHEV) of electric vehicles in Bavaria was 19.4% in Q2/2024, around one percentage point higher than in the previous quarter. Following the significant slump in Q1/2024, a slight recovery can therefore be observed again. The number of chargeable vehicles (BEV + PHEV) per public AC charging point in Bavaria is currently around the same level as the previous quarters at 26 vehicles. One DC charging point in Bavaria is currently shared by the equivalent of 50 BEVs (previous quarter: 57 BEVs). The promotion of the expansion of the fast-charging infrastructure in conjunction with the currently rather low number of new BEV registrations means that this figure is the lowest of the last ten quarters.
The share of new registrations of BEVs in Bavaria in Q2 was exactly 14% and of PHEVs 5.4%. The largest share of all-electric vehicles (BEVs) in new registrations was again registered in the administrative district of Middle Franconia (16%). The administrative districts of Lower Franconia and Swabia followed close behind with 15 percent each.
TOP 5 districts / cities:
Broken down into cities or districts, the district of Rosenheim (Upper Bavaria) landed in first place by a large margin in Q2/2024 with a BEV new registration rate of 49 percent. The district of Erlangen-Höchstadt (Middle Franconia) again followed in second place with 26%. The districts of Würzburg (Lower Franconia) and Amberg-Sulzbach (Upper Palatinate) came in third and fourth with 22% of new registrations in the past quarter. Finally, fifth place went to the district of Kitzingen (Lower Franconia) with 20 percent of new registrations.
Compact overview
The quarterly report provides a compact overview of current developments in electromobility in Bavaria. The Electromobility Competence Center at Bayern Innovativ prepares the data in a factual and neutral manner.

*** Assumptions:
1) The vehicle stocks are based on the KBA's stock figures at the beginning of the year and are still offset against a forecast of new registrations.
2) For the ratio of charging processes per charging point, we offset the total number of recorded charging processes against the number of charging points from which we obtain dynamic ("live") data. The ratio of dynamic charging points to the total number of charging points for Bavaria is over 80%.
3) The quarterly report documents the development of public charging infrastructure in Bavaria. The information on the development of these charging options therefore relates to purely publicly accessible charging locations and therefore does not take into account charging points from closed user groups (e.g. charging points in private underground car parks, on factory premises, etc.). For technical reasons, it has not yet been possible to identify charging infrastructure that is only accessible to the public, resulting in deviations from previous quarterly reports.
