Milestone for Bayreuth's heat transition

Municipal utilities rely on sustainable heat from waste heat and heat pumps

06.11.2024

Stadtwerke Bayreuth is building a new heating center in Ludwig-Thoma-Straße, which will supply the district heating network with renewable heat.

From next year, a combination of a heat pump and the use of waste heat from the Blaha company will generate enough heat to heat around 400 single-family homes. At this historic site, where the horses of the margrave's equestrian garrison were once housed, a listed building is being converted for the new heating center - a symbol of the combination of tradition and future.

The project addresses two key challenges: More space enables more heat to be produced, and the use of renewable energy sources helps to meet the German government's strict targets, according to which a third of district heating is to come from renewable sources by 2030. Blaha supplies the process heat, which is fed into the district heating network via heat exchangers and heat pumps.

Blaha Managing Director Carsten Lages also emphasizes the benefits for everyone involved, as the use of waste heat contributes to increasing the company's efficiency and actively supports the heat transition. The animal welfare association, which sold the property to Stadtwerke, is also pleased about the cooperation, which enables the association to carry out renovations at its own site.

In future, the city of Bayreuth plans to press ahead with the expansion of the district heating network in order to meet the demand for environmentally friendly heat in the city center. Lord Mayor Thomas Ebersberger sees the project as a decisive step towards climate neutrality by 2040.

In addition to district heating, Stadtwerke Bayreuth also offers green electricity, natural gas, e-mobility, photovoltaics and other services. With 430 employees, Stadtwerke achieved a turnover of 212 million euros in 2023.
