Quarterly report on electromobility in Bavaria Q3/2023
12/19/2023
The number of fully electric cars in Bavaria increased by over 12 percent in the last quarter.
LOADING INFRASTRUCTURE:
1) Charging locations: In Q3, a total of 473 charging locations with 1,602 charging points were recorded in Bavaria. This means that a considerable number of new charging points were once again connected to the grid in the past quarter. In total, there are now almost 20,000 publicly accessible charging points available to electric car drivers. At just under 18%, the proportion of newly installed fast-charging points (DC) was once again high. At 8.4%, the expansion rate of charging hubs with AC & DC charging points in the third quarter was slightly lower than in the previous quarters.
2) Charging events: With over 1.3 million charging events recorded, the existing record from Q4/2022 was only just missed. Compared to the previous quarter, the number of charging sessions increased by around 90,000. Compared to the same quarter of the previous year, the number of charging sessions also increased by around 15%. Around 80 percent of the charging processes recorded were AC charging processes and around 20 percent were DC charging processes.
3) TOP 5 charging locations in Bavaria Although the new EnBW Charging Hub with 24 AC and DC charging points in the shopping area in Unterhaching was able to increase the number of charging processes by around 100 to over 7,300 charging processes, it was only enough for second place in the past quarter. The Ionity fast charging location in Illertissen on the A7 motorway took first place among the most used charging locations in Bavaria. Places 3 and 4 are again occupied by Ionity fast-charging locations on federal highways. The Fastned charging park east of Aschaffenburg, which has excellent connections to the A3 and B26 and is equipped with 8 fast-charging points, follows in 5th place with only a few charging processes in between.
The proportion of new registrations (BEV + PHEV) of electric vehicles in Bavaria was just under 28% in the last quarter. Once again, the proportion of newly registered plug-in hybrids was only a low six percent. The number of chargeable vehicles (BEV + PHEV) per public charging point rose again slightly in the third quarter. This means that there are now around 28 vehicles (BEV + PHEV) per AC charging point in Bavaria, compared to 26 in the previous quarter. For DC charging points, the number of vehicles (BEV) per charging point again fell slightly. This means that there are now only 54 BEVs per DC charging point in Bavaria (previous quarter: 56 BEVs).
The proportion of new registrations of BEVs in Bavaria in Q3 was just under 22 percent and six percent for PHEVs. The largest share of all-electric vehicles (BEVs) in new registrations was registered in the administrative district of Middle Franconia (26%). This was immediately followed by Lower Franconia and Swabia in second place, each with one percentage point less, followed by Upper Franconia in third place with 24 percent.
TOP 5 districts / cities:
Broken down to cities or districts In the second quarter, the city of Hof (Upper Franconia) was in first place with a 40% BEV new registration rate, closely followed by the city of Aschaffenburg (Lower Franconia) and the district of Erlangen-Höchstadt (Middle Franconia) in second and third place respectively with a 38% BEV rate. The districts of Aschaffenburg (Lower Franconia) and Haßberge (Lower Franconia) follow slightly behind in 4th and 5th place with 33% and 32% respectively.
Compact overview

*** Assumptions:
1) The vehicle stocks are based on the KBA's stock figures at the beginning of the year and are still offset against a forecast of new registrations.
2) For the ratio of charging processes per charging point, we offset the total number of recorded charging processes against the number of charging points from which we obtain dynamic ("live") data. The ratio of dynamic charging points to the total number of charging points for Bavaria is over 80%.
3) The quarterly report documents the development of public charging infrastructure in Bavaria. The information on the development of these charging options therefore relates to purely publicly accessible charging locations and therefore does not take into account charging points for closed user groups (e.g. charging points in private underground car parks, on factory premises, etc.). For technical reasons, it has not yet been possible to identify purely publicly accessible charging infrastructure, which results in deviations from previous quarterly reports.
