CoSMoS 2021 - 3 questions for Dorothea Bateva, Deutsche Bahn, Frankfurt

Mrs. Dorothea Bateva, Product Lead DB Curbside Management, Deutsche Bahn, joined us on March 02, 2021 at our digital edition of this year's Conference on Smart Mobility Services (CoSMoS) in the kick-off session "Tools for Managing Municipalities" as a speaker on the topic "Curbside Management - Who controls the urban areas for mobility". As part of the Bayern Innovativ series "Three questions to ..." we have asked you in advance for a short interview.

City spaces are being taken up by an increasing number of modes of transport - from public transport to rental bikes and suppliers. Curbside Management focuses on intelligently managing the use of these mobility spaces as part of transportation and urban planning.

Dorothea Bateva Product Lead DB Curbside Management, Deutsche Bahn (Frankfurt)

Mrs. Bateva, what do you mean by "curbside management"?

Dorothea Bateva: Literally translated, curbside management means "management of the road edge". While private cars, buses and cabs used to take up space, today vehicles from sharing providers (rental bikes, scooters) and on-demand shuttle services are increasingly taking up urban space. The demand on the street edge is therefore becoming more diverse and complex. Parking management is classically limited to the management of motorized individual traffic. Curbside management, on the other hand, considers the entire breadth of mobility and optimizes stationary traffic.

Curbside management aims to balance the needs of all road users. The primary goal is to allocate spaces in terms of their use based on the digital image of the road's curb. The mobility and access to a wide variety of roadside requirements (e.g., car sharing, shared micro mobility, such as rental bikes or e-trekkers, and virtual bus stops) should thus be maximized. Mobility services in cities can then be intelligently managed by collecting data and making it available on a platform: Cities themselves can define in the application where and when sharing and delivery services are allowed to park their vehicles. Stops and parking spaces can thus be integrated into the overall mobility concept and, by dovetailing with the public transit lead to sustainable traffic congestion in cities.

What are the benefits of curbside management for cities and municipalities?

Dorothea Bateva: First of all, curbside management meets the increasing desire of cities for regulation and serves here quasi as a tool for orchestrating land use for mobility. Furthermore, the possibility of dynamic distribution of land use brings great advantages. The same roadside space can be used for shared micro mobility or as a delivery zone during the week, while it is available to short-term parkers on the weekend. Last but not least, Curbside Management enables better and more efficient coordination between the city and the increasing number of mobility providers. For example, restrictions due to road works, demonstrations, etc. can be automated or easily exchanged via a digital platform .

Where is this application already being used?

Dorothea Bateva: As is so often the case, the U.S., e.g. Portland, Austin or San Francisco , is also a pioneer here. There, there are even initial curb strategies aimed at optimizing the use of scarce urban and serving the maximum number of people and their needs

Thank you, Ms. Bateva, for these interesting insights. We look forward to more details in your presentation at the CoSMoS !
