Aim of the working group

The goal of the Sustainable Electronics Working Group, as defined by the participants, is to develop a position paper that deals with current challenges and solutions for the semiconductor and electronics industry in Bavaria and beyond on the topic of sustainable electronics.

Steps taken so far

In 2024, the working group worked on the topic of sustainable electronics in the following steps

  • Identifying the specific use cases for the topic of sustainable electronics
  • Formulating the challenges for the current situation
  • Developing solution approaches
  • Developing positive future scenarios
  • Outlining measures

Topics

The following topics were addressed in particular:

  • Repair
  • Reuse
  • Refurbish
  • Recycling
  • Reusability of durable components
  • Design for Recycling, for Reuse, for Refurbish
  • Digital product passport and regulation
  • Material declaration
  • B2B marketplace for production waste
  • Power electronics
  • Repair of end-user products
  • Life cycle costs

Based on the content developed by the participants, the Bavarian Chips Alliance will formulate a position paper as a first draft and present it in the online session. The draft will be made available to the participants in advance.

Publication

In coordination with the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy (client of the Bavarian Chips Alliance).

Preferred publication date: June 2025.

Preliminary addressees

  • Industry (Which trends should companies from the semiconductor / electronics industry be aware of and address?)
  • Politics at EU level (Where can politics provide support and set the course for sustainable electronics?)

The two-hour online session will be divided into the following steps:

  • Welcome and introduction
  • Presentation of the structure of the position paper
  • Division into groups per text section (5-6 people, several groups per section if there is particular interest)
  • Short reading time in the groups
  • Development of comments and new formulations together with the other group members
  • Presentation of the results per group in plenary with joint discussion
  • End and outlook
