Additive manufacturing - just a hypothetical topic?

Additive manufacturing seems to become an increasingly important production method, as can be read in numerous studies. According to ING Bank, 50% of all manufactured goods could be produced via additive processes in 2040 [1]. PwC concludes in a 2018 study that the market volume for printed components could increase to approximately €22 billion by 2030 [2]. These are only two statements, but they exemplify the impressive potential that is attributed to additive manufacturing. In order to exploit this potential, massive upheavals in manufacturing and in the way components are designed today are required.

With this in mind, the question arises as to how realistic these forecasts are and where the challenges currently lie for additive manufacturing to achieve this predicted growth. For this reason, the following section uses selected questions to provide a picture of the mood regarding the current status of additive manufacturing .
